Great news for Scottish skating: Sport Scotland are to support a three year Scottish Short Track Development programme. The plan was prepared and presented by Archie Marshall (Sk8scotland Speed Director) and Stuart Horsepool (GB Performance Director – Short Track). The programme will focus on a club development and a Scottish Development Squad that will be part of the pathway to GB Junior and Senior squads. It will be run by Archie starting April 2012 in partnership with Sport Scotland who will bring high levels of expertise as well as financial support to the programme. The partnership with Sport Scotland is a great opportunity for our sport, one that we all must work to maximise.

With Elise Christie ranked 2nd in the World at 1000m and Scottish skaters taking 4 of the 9 titles and 8 of the 27 medals at last week’s British Championships in Nottingham, this is an exciting time for the sport.

BBC Sports Presenter Mike Bushell has recently been to Dumfries to film an action piece on synchronized skating with the Dumfries Synchro teams and it is scheduled to be aired on BBC Breakfast on Christmas Eve morning (Sat 24th December) between 6:00 – 10:00 and repeated several times. Anne-Marie Coxon, Chair of the Dumfries club said:

“The BBC filming went very well. They had done their research on synchro so pretty much everything I dropped in they seemed to know about. The girls had fun and Mike himself was very game – participating in a wheel and an intersection! It is scheduled to go out on BBC Breakfast News on Christmas Eve between 6am and 10am – will be shown several times throughout the morning. Solway Stars and Solway Eclipse were the teams involved – Solway Breeze did a run through of their British silver medal winning performance as well.”

By Paul Forsyth
Scotland on Sunday, Sunday 18 December 2011

Scottish short-track racer’s sport was transformed by Olympic money – now she’s targeting a medal

IF you are one of the many thousands who have been persuaded, against their better judgment, to pull on a pair of bladed boots, totter on to the ice rink in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens and cling pathetically to the perimeter fence, you might be interested in the progress lately of Elise Christie.

She was seven when she took her first steps on the ice at Murrayfield. Almost immediately, she was shooting off across the surface and setting in motion a journey that has perpetually gathered pace in the 14 years since. Now based in Nottingham, and ranked second in the world, the short-track speed skater from Livingston is closing fast on a medal at the Winter Olympics.

Sk8scotland is delighted to announce to members throughout Scotland, that an exciting new project to encourage skaters with all categories of disability or impairment to participate in the sport, has recently received the full support of the ISU.

Sk8scotland is delighted to announce to members throughout Scotland, that an exciting new project to encourage skaters with all categories of disability or impairment to participate in the sport, has recently received the full support of the ISU. In a letter to the project’s founder, Margarita Sweeney-Baird, David Dore, 1st Vice President of the ISU said:

“It goes without saying that the members of the Council have great interest in this field of skating. I believe in your report you have put everything into complete perspective, allowing all of us to comprehend the situation. Therefore, the ISU remains quite supportive of your continuing efforts and feels that this should become an important program activity of the skating world in the future. You should continue your efforts in supporting disabled skating in the world. To this end we agree that your participation and activity as outlined in the near future for 2012, should be pursued as you outlined”.

Plans are already well advanced for the first ever Impaired Skating Championship to be held in Dumfries on 12-13th May 2012, where the full system will be tested. The event has already been recognised by Special Olympics GB, and as this event will also be the first ever British Special Olympics Championships, should the application for a quota from GB be successful the skaters participating in the Dumfries event will be selected by Special Olympics GB to go to the World Special Olympics in Pyong Chang in Korea in 2013. This initiative is the first step in a programme aimed at getting ice skating recognised as a full Paralympic sport.

Impaired Skating aims to offer Learn to Skate programmes with “badge courses” as well as competition and Championship events for skaters with all categories of disability – blind, deaf, physical or intellectual. All disciplines will be involved including singles, ice dance, speed skating and even Impaired Synchro Team skating.

For full details about Impaired Skating go to the Impaired Skating website and find out more. Parents and Coaches – if you know of skaters in your club or rink who may have a disability and might be interested in getting involved, or even competing in Dumfries, please get them to check out the Impaired Skating website.

Sk8scotland is fully supportive of this Impaired Skating programme and is working with Impaired Skating to develop the system. Several Sk8scotland Board Directors are also Trustees of the Impaired Skating Charity.
