In Memory of Bob Ure

It is with sad regret that we have to advise that member of the Club, Bob Ure, passed away on Friday 27th February 2009 aged 89 years.
Bob was an Honorary President, Hon. Life Member and one of the founder member of Murrayfield Ice Skating Club, Scotland’s oldest ice skating club.
At the start of W.W.2 bob was a radio operator in the middle east before he transferred to the Royal Marines. He was one of the first people to use a radar screen. After the war he took up a post with the Inland Revenue where he rose to a senior level before transferring to H.M. Customs and Excise Service where he remained until retirement in 1969.
His two abiding passions, which he shared with his wife Pamela, were skiing and ice skating. This was in the days before ski lifts and meant long walks up the hills for a short trip down. After he gave up skiing due to ill health he still took up his annual trip up to the Cairngorm to visit old friends.
Together with several other skating enthusiasts he helped form Murrayfield Ice Skating Club in 1957. He served on the Clubs Executive Committee for many years in a variety of roles, including Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary.
In his later years he acted as the Club’s auditor, a position in which he served with due diligence until ill health forced him to step down
In the early years he was a regular competitor in the Club competitions as well as the Scottish events run by the Scottish Liaison Committee which he became a member of. He was also played an important role in the creation of the Scottish Ice Figure Skating Association (SIFSA) of which he was the secretary for many years. Most skaters would have recognised his voice as the one who answered the phone when calling the SIFSA office where as a volunteer he arranged tests, competitions and sent out grated test badges to clubs throughout Scotland.
He was also an ice skating judge in figures, free and ice dance for both the National Ice Skating Association (NISA) and the Scottish Ice Figure Skating Association (SIFSA). In this capacity he judged tests and competitions throughout Scotland and the North east of England including numerous Scottish Championship events.
Sadly Pamela passed away in 2008. Our thoughts and best wishes go to his daughter Elizabeth, son John, granddaughter Kirsty and all members of the family.
